Week 3, 4th session, Sri Bintang (14.01.2020)

I worked out my arms in the morning at the nearby playground, watched Star Wars then met with a insurance lady in the afternoon. Wrap up the day with a hike in the evening.

Alright, some nice member picked up my resistance band and kept it for me. Manage to get it back this evening. Really happy and content. Stayed around a bit and chatted with Tan and Ronnie. Great people who make this community happens. They told me they will do some press conference with some MP (Kepong?) to do some check receiving event. Hope to see some picture and video from them soon. Hell, I would love to attend and shoot the event myself.

Edit: I just checked with CL Tan, he say its just two dude going to pickup a check, it will not have a nice photo-op with hand shakes, a small crowd clapping and models looking pretty at the side. Oh well, I guess it’s cause we are a small club.

Some DIY book mentioned that, if you showed up everyday (I’m not referring to daily work here), for gym, or any sort of self improving activities, good things will come. You will attract energy and be an energy creator yourself. Of course, in a more scientific terms, if you have improved yourself in areas such as physical look, better social skills, then naturally your circle of friends and associates will expand as well.

When I started this in the first week, I’m really sleepy even after 1 workout, but today I was out thrice and still feeling good. I’m going to hit Penang with my good buddy Kelvin. Just two bros hitting the road and loading up with junk foods. That’s gonna end up as some serious fats to be burned. Let’s see if the condo gym is good.

OKCupid Introduction Speech

I’m just recording types of intro that I have used; see if there is a pattern of success or failure (dammit!).

Hi Wendy, nice to know you. Well, with your experience in listening to people, want to help me craft some really good motivation speech? Hope to hear from you.

Hi Tahira, nice to meet you. So what do you want to be the best at? Hope to hear from you.

Hi Pauline, nice to meet you. Is jazz music a big nono? First time I googled ‘oxford comma’. Are you a writer too? Hope to hear from you.

Hi Jenkuan, nice to meet you. I’m looking for a talkative friend so that they can help me with some motivational speech which I’m doing every day on a hill as part of my training. Hope you’re interested to help me out, hear from you soon ya.

Hi Michelle, nice to meet you. If you really are a psychic, take a look at my profile and IG https://www.instagram.com/charlie.ycs/ and give me a reading please. Hope to hear from you.

Week 3, 3rd training,13.01.2020 good stuff happens!

Good things can really happen when you show up. I left my resistance band yesterday but I happen to meet some founding members of the Sri Bintang Club. One of them, Mr Tan promised to help me check if any members chanced upon the band, and voila, someone kept it in a box in the shed. I will also give him my membership form. Looking forward to hike with the official shirt, woot.

Week 3, 2nd day training at Sri Bintang

Went out even when it was raining, (just do it!)I did the usual, hike up in 10min, did a bunch of arm workout, this time with the resistance band at all. Even stepping on the band I still couldnt get a pull up done. Perhaps I should get a stronger band, or just train longer.

Updated my OkCupid profile. Seriously need to get on IG, just for dating purpose I guess. Going to get this out right off the bat. Chances will be low. Just got to treat this as a process. Not a goal, not getting a reply on the platform doesnt mean failure. It just means the profile is not good enough or my message is not witty etc. These stuff can be improved. Girls clicking on me is not an action I can control.

Ideas: Write and read my reply in real time and post it up on youtube. Hell, at least someone should get some laugh out of it.

Week 3, 1st Hike at FRIM Kepong, 11.01.2020

Hiked at FRIM, the syabas trail is mostly walk in the forest, and doesnt even require huge steps or hand holds, except for a small stretch where a cement path can be quite slippery when wet. The deeper you go the higher chance you will be ambushed by leech, therefore when the trail got much denser we stopped and turned back. There is a path way in the middle of the trail that supposedly leads to the botanical path according to other hikers which we asked for direction earlier. We didn’t explore it though.

Overall, the whole FRIM area is quite well maintained and you can notice that the landscape has routine grass cutting in the area that’s road facing and you can even smell the chemical fogging used to clear dengue breeding ground.

Had some chicken rice with plain rice (no oily rice!) for brunch.

Every interview should be a unique experience

Had one of the best interview experience at EOA this afternoon. I discussed cordially with an experienced director that focused more on the mindset of his potential employee. Some employer may look for a clean cut record, of continuous relevant experience and knowledge, not discounting the fact that everyone’s life is unique.

There is a distinction between being competent in your job and competent in job hunting, which, depending on the duration and effort put in your daily work, you will become good at it in due time. The same cannot be said for job hunting. First, you cannot attempt application multiple times for the same company. Therefore you cannot apply the knowledge of your earlier failures. Second, you cannot arrange the order of interviews/opening and job offers. Even if you could theoretically score two or three job offers, it would most likely not come at the same time. You will most likely take the first that is being offered unless you have specific and timely information that another offer is incoming.

Ok, lets put it as a scenario here:

A person send out three application, with one of them being his top choice, and the other two being secondary, not the best but could be an improvement over the current (or not). Assuming his interview passing chance is about the same for 3 different companies, he only has somewhere a maximum of 33% chance of getting his dream job. Now add in the timing of getting interview and receiving a feedback on whether he got the job or not, all this will affect the maximum chance.

Unless a person is really patient and only pounce on the best job (when it has opening, and an interview is given), it is unlikely that a perfect continuous record can be created for most employee. I understand that employer ask questions along this line to look for holes in the story, or signs of incompetence. But I stress that a non continuous job record should not be an issue by itself. It is the nature of work and life experience, where a little bit of luck comes into play and usually it comes with a lot of up and downs.

Of course, even as I write this, a person should continuously build on skillets that will increase the odd for success. For that area is manageable and under the control of an individual.

Hiking process (not goal!) for the year 2020

It is very important to highlight the difference, there is no goal here, no specific mileage to run, no kg’s of weight to lose. A process is a set of activity that needs to be performed on a regular schedule and followed as close as possible. In the event that a schedule is missed, then it needs to be continued without giving up or making excuses.

The process here is basically, three hikes or similar activities per week. Similar activities can be body weight training performed at home, or in the public playground. Solo hikes can be done in near Sri Bintang or slightly further in Bukit Gasing. Group hikes will be anywhere chosen by friends/meetup groups.

This process as described above need to be believed and committed to, in order to build a routine and a mind body connection. This is critical, as goals are prone to failure and even if you make progress it can still feel like failure (aww, 3kg instead of 5kg lost). Do not even name this as a new year resolution.

Progress will be checked in a month for noticeable body changes. Remember it is fine even if you do not lose an inch off your waist, it could be due to diet. Arm strength needs to be recorded; duration of bar hanging, numbers of assisted push ups. Reps need to be increased to accommodate body adaptation.

Do all these and you will be successful.
